Two-on-Two Defense

Helpside Position
Step 1
Defender X1 pressures the ball and pushes the dribbler (01) to the baseline.
Defender X2 is off the ball, on helpside position seeing the man and ball up the line and on the line.

Step 2
Defender X1 influences the dribbler to baseline.
The defender X2 slides down to the middle of the lane to protect the basket.

Helpside Position to a Full Denial Position
Step 1
If offense player 01 passes the ball to the coach, defenders X1 and X2 jump to an up-the-line, on-the line denial position.

Step 2
This is where the players should be after 01 passes to the coach.

Step 3
The coach passes the ball to offense 02 and defender X2 pressures the ball.
Defender X1 quickly moves to a helpside position. Seeing ball and man.

Ball Denial
The offense players try to get open to receive the ball from the coach.
Both defenders are on the line and up the line with the arm and foot in the passing lane.

Note: If one of the offense players receive the ball, they play two-on-two.

Wing Denial
The offense players try to get open to receive the ball from the coach.
Both defenders are on the line and up the line with the arm and foot in the passing lane.

Note: If one of the offense players receive the ball, then play two-on-two.

Defending Cutters
Step 1
This drill will help your players recognize and defend cuts to the ball.
Keep a hand in the passing lane at all times.
Cutters can be difficult to defend.
Play off and do not allow (stick) any direct cuts to the ball or basket.

Step 2
The same defense technique as the drill before.
Do not let your man receive the ball.

Jump to the Ball
Step 1
Offense player 01 passes the ball to 02 on the wing.
As the ball is in the air, defender X1 moves in the direction of the pass, and then assumes a pass denial position against 01.
Defender X1 should be on the line and up the line.
The defenders allow the ball to be caught and continue to jump to the ball as it is passed back and fourth.

Jump to the Ball
Step 2
This is where the players should be after 01 passes to the coach.

Help and Recover From the Top
Offense player 01 drives to the gap between X1 and X2.
X2, who is on the line and up the line guarding 02, should stop 01 from penetration.
When X2 stops 01, 01 passes to 02.
X2 quickly recovers back to 02.

Help and Recover from Wing
The same defense technique as the previous drill.

Help and Recover from the Post
Defender X1 pushes 01 to the baseline toward the post area.
X2 stops 01 and quickly recovers back to the post.

Cover Across & Closeout
Offense player 02 is at low post receiving the ball from the coach.
X2 must quickly shut off the baseline drive and make the post turn middle.
X1 who is in the helpside position, dives into the post area, and stops 02 to go middle.
When 02 can not move to either direction (baseline or middle) he makes a skip pass to 01 at oppesite wing.
Defender X1 recovers to closeout against 01.

Two-on-Two Full Court Defense
Allow the offensive players only three dribbles before they must pass.
Defensively, players work for on-the-ball defense, one pass away, and helpside defense footwork and communication.
When the two offensive players get to the three-point-line at opposite end, they are allowed to attack the basket.
